Red Fox

Yesterday afternoon, when I opened the front door,  I saw this red fox (vulpes vulpes) hunting in my neighbor’s field.  There was barely time to grab the camera before the fox disappeared over the hilltop.

One year, a vixen raised her kits in a den under my old barn.  She was a polite lodger, never intrusive.  On fine days, she’d take the kits into the field, where they’d scamper and roll in the grass.  The horses paid no attention to them.

In later years, coyotes arrived in such numbers that we rarely saw foxes.  This year, while there are still some coyotes, the foxes seem to have returned, perhaps because many rabbits have flourished on lush grass this summer.

Although living in the country , and living here, present some disadvantages, the view is easy on the eyes.  Here’s an early morning view of the field where the fox was hunting.
