Lacock, in Wiltshire, is only about 35 miles from Wells, in Somerset, but the journey between them took us two hours. We were lost for the first hour, despite a map, a friend’s detailed written directions, and the satnav system. We realized we’d made a wrong turn shortly after leaving Wells, but weren’t concerned, since we had the satnav as backup.

These beauties were blooming in my mother’s garden in central Kentucky this Fourth of July. I especially love the old double lilies that have bloomed at that house for at least forty years, and probably much longer; and the tiger lilies, which were my grandmother’s.
