I don’t usually spend so much time at Keeneland, but have had to go there for business several days this spring meet. Truly a tough assignment!
Despite repeated spring storms, my first few visits fell on fair-weather days. The last two (Good Friday and today) did not.
These photographs are from Good Friday. Rain held off for the first few races; then the umbrellas came out. My favorite of the lot was the Perrier Jouët umbrella, in a nice froggy shade of green, close in color to Keeneland’s signature green. The umbrella with the pink stripes was a bright spot against the leaden sky.
Note the leather shoulder guards on some of the “pony” horses; the nervous young thoroughbreds these great, calm horses are minding must be biters.
Note also the wild eyes on the horse who’s just finished his race. These runners are just babies, walking past noisy crowds, with a storm coming.
